Shareholder Democracies? Corporate Governance in Britain and Ireland before 1850

I have worked with Robin Pearson (University of Hull) and James Taylor (Lancaster University) on a major ESRC-funded research project. For 2 years James Taylor and I were employed by the University of Hull to work on this project. In early 2012 our jointly-authored monograph, Shareholder Democracies? Corporate Governance in Britain and Ireland before 1850 was published by the University of Chicago Press.

In March 2013 this book was awarded the Ralph Gomory Prize, awarded by the Business History Conference, and supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Articles based on this research have also appeared in the English Historical Review, Business History and Accounting, Business and Financial History, and we have presented papers at several conferences and seminar series.

We also edited an 8-volume series of primary sources, The History of the Company: The Development of the Business Corporation 1700-1914, published by Pickering and Chatto in 2006-7.
